My Fairy

My Fairy
by Rizwan Ahmed Memon

I called her my fairy.
She smiled at me and I felt merry.

I asked her where she had come from.
With her smiling face she replied
From the fairies’ world in the heavens.
I asked her who she had come for.
In soft voice she replied
I was the one she sought.

I inquired her whether she would be with me for good.
She said she had to go back.
I asked why the separation after coming in my life.
I told her it was not right,
She should stay with me on the earth,
Or take me with her to the fairies’ world.

She agreed that she would take me to the fairies’ world.
And would be with me forever.

Silently

Silently
by Rizwan Ahmed Memon

Without you near my eyes wept silently,
My tears rolled on my cheeks silently,
My heart beat for you silently.
My longing for you woke me up at night silently,
Your memory hurt me in the room silently.
Your absence on the bed stabbed me in the darkness silently,
My separation from you suffocated my soul at the midnight silently.

(14) ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER

Dearest Angly,

Two days ago when I came to see you at your parents’ house, I felt as if I were going to see you for the first time. My heart was beating a little quicker, and I couldn’t wait to see you. I noticed in your eyes that you, too, were so happy to see me. The way you held my hands made me feel you missed me so much. If two or three days of being away from each other bring more love in our hearts, sometimes we should be parted. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Yesterday was May 16. It has been a month now since we got married. Life is a dream, isn’t it? Angly, days will pass, months will pass, years will pass, but my love for you will be the same forever. My body with the passage of time can grow weaker, but my love will never be affected. The love that I have for you is not based on temporary emotions. Sometimes when I read the other letters that I have written to you on my blog, I feel our love will always be in the world, and people will know and appreciate our love through these letters and be healed by it. My love is endless for you.

Yours forever,
  Rizwan

(13) SINCE THE DAY YOU CAME IN MY LIFE

Dearest Angly,

How are you? How is your family? It is going to be a month since we got married! Yesterday when you went to visit your parents, I kept thinking about when you will return. Since the day you came in my life, my life has been filled with colors.

I still remember when I was in university away from my home. I hardly ever laughed. Now you have come in my life and I am back in my homeland, so there is always a smile on my face. Being away from you and my homeland was painful.

When I used to come home on holidays and meet my family, I couldn’t hold back my tears. I used to burst into tears when my mother hugged me. Oh Angly, gone are those days of separation and distance.

Angly, the love you have given me is precious and unforgettable. My poems show how highly I value you and your love. Sometimes I feel my poems cannot show the extent of your worth. If I used all the words of all the dictionaries in the world, still your worth could not be defined. My words are weak and they don’t come easily. Your beauty, your soft voice, your tender touch, your innocent face, your purity of thought inspires me to write about love.

Today after many days, I went for a long walk to the river. Suddenly a heavy wind started to blow. Dust and sand mixed up in the air and nothing could be seen. Dust was all around. I closed my eyes, put hands on my ears, and stopped along the way on the levee. I waited until the wind died down, and then I went to the riverbank and sat there for a long time. The wind started to blow again!

The waves were so high. As if the River Indus were an ocean! Your memory started to flash, your voice started to echo, and I felt you were just sitting with me there on the bank. My thoughts flashed back to the first time we saw each other, and the day we got engaged. How strange this might be to many people that even though we were engaged, we never talked on phone and never met for almost five years because of our religious and family customs.

When I came home, it was almost night. I was out for a long time. When you are at home, I don’t go out for that long now! And when you go to visit your parents, I feel my time stands still!

Angly, I am so happy with you. Thank you for coming in my life. I will come to get you after your brother’s marriage. Enjoy the time with your family and relatives. Soon I will come over to see you.

Yours always,
  Rizwan

Nothing Else

Nothing Else
(Original poem in Sindhi by Ali Gul Sangi)
English translation by Rizwan Ahmed Memon

Away from you is pain,
Nothing else.
Long time no see - it is being mad,
Nothing else.
No letter, no message - it is forgetting,
Nothing else.
No meeting, no call, no voice - it is clear, it is parting,
Nothing else.
Missing in the morning, in the evening, and at night - it is longing,
Nothing else.

A Marvelous Maiden

A Marvelous Maiden
by Rizwan Ahmed Memon

In May the summer
I married a marvelous maiden.
Bright was her face
Pink were her cheeks.

Red were her lips
Deep were her eyes;
Little were her hands
Light were her feet.

Long were her hair
Fine was her figure;
Dense were her eyelashes
Silent was she.

Spoke she slowly
Smiled she gently;
In May the summer
I married a marvelous maiden.

My Ultimate World

My Ultimate World
by Rizwan Ahmed Memon

In her arms was my ultimate world.
Her lips were no less than honey.
Her long dark hair was like the dark clouds of summer,
Which provided comforting shadows.
When she held my hand in her hand, I felt safe.
In her company my life took on new colors.

Let’s Make a World

Let’s Make a World
by Rizwan Ahmed Memon

Let’s make a world
Where no worries can enter.
Let’s make a nest
Which no wind can break.
Let’s make a garden
Where flowers of love can bloom.
Let’s go somewhere
Where time can never end,
Where we can remain young forever,
And make endless love.

When She Smiles

When She Smiles
by Rizwan Ahmed Memon

Wind blows, clouds gather
When she smiles.
Flowers bloom, fragrance spreads
When she smiles.

Wounds heal, fears drown
When she smiles.
Dreams come true, plans work
When she smiles.

Life fills with colors, everything has charm
When she smiles.
Fate changes, prayers are heard
When she smiles.

The sun rises, the night falls
When she smiles.
Stars twinkle, moon shines
When she smiles.
